As most of you know, I don't get annoyed very easily or at very many things. Well today I was... I suppose you could say I was perplexed. Here is the story:
I went into Taco Bell and walked up to the counter. The kid behind the counter said, "Hello sir, how can I help you today?" I ordered two volcano tacos (a new product that is damn tasty) and then I had a thought, at which point I stated to the young man, "If I ordered a Grande Meal, could I substitute the volcano tacos for two of the regular ones that would normally come with the meal? I will pay extra if I have to." The kid looked at me, seemingly perplexed by the terribly confusing question I had just posed to him and with a hint of fear in his eyes said, "Umm.... I have to ask a manager", at which point he turned around and did so. The manager, a small, quiet woman with no expression on her face whatsoever, after hearing my question, simply shook her head "no" and continued on her way. The guy turned to me and said, "Sorry, we can't do that." I was a little curious as to why it seemed to be such a big deal, so I asked the obviouse question, "Why not?" at which point the guy leaned in and quietly whispered, almost as a secret, "We just can't." Ok. Fine. This isn't a big deal. Let it go. I will order the volcano tacos seperate and get some other stuff to go with it and I'll be fine.
Now for the transaction. "Your total is $7.67 sir. Would you like to donate to [insert any charitable cause here cause I can't remember the actual name]?" "No thanks." Says I. "Your order number is 252. Have a nice day sir" Okay, now there is a reason that the Taco Bell employees dialogue is highlighted in blue. As I sat there eating my lunch, I heard this exact same speech to every person who walked up to the counter. Even two guys who were there together in line but ordering seperate. With the exception of options concerning certain menu items, this guy had the exact same programmed speech to every person. Now I know this may not seem like a big deal to you, but when I go into a store, resturant, movie theater, gas station, I don't want to be talked to like every other Joe Blow who walks through the door. I want the employee to ask me how my day is going, tell me a story about his dog he just bought, or how his wife just had a baby. It bugs the shit out of me when an employee treats me just like everyone else that comes in the store just because when he was hired he was handed a book that told him exactly what to say and that it was "store policy". I am an individual damnit and talking to me like you don't have an ounce of respect for me as an individual does not make me want to give you or your company my money. Franchise, corporate, or local. Don't be a robot, and don't treat me like a "customer" just cause your handbook tells you too.
